Information for Patients Thyroid cancer is a cancerous tumor or growth in the thyroid gland. Most thyroid cancers can be treated successfully — the overall 5-year survival rate is 96%. Even when therapy is successful, your physician may want you to be tested routinely for recurrence. As many as 30% of thyroid cancers may recur, and one third of recurrences may happen 10 years or more after initial treatment.
