Follow-up Overview

If you’ve been diagnosed with well-differentiated thyroid cancer, you may have been told that the prognosis is good. Most thyroid cancers can be treated successfully – the overall 5-year survival rate of people diagnosed with thyroid cancer is 96%. Most importantly, if the disease is detected early and treated appropriately, thyroid cancer management can be managed effectively.

However, even as a long-term survivor, you still need to be monitored for any possible recurrence. One danger following successful initial therapy is skipping some of your tests in order to avoid the effects of hypothyroidism, especially if you’ve had a few years of negative tests. But it’s essential to follow the schedule your doctor recommends so you can catch any recurrence as early as possible. And if you and your doctor decide that Thyrogen® is right for you, you can stay on your thyroid hormone therapy, and avoid the effects of hypothyroidism. For more information, please read the full product information (PDF) and the safety information below.

This section provides an overview of what to expect in the years after thyroidectomy and radioiodine therapy. It will also discuss the importance of follow-up testing, and explain Thyrogen’s potential role in helping you avoid hypothyroidism. Please refer to the full product information (PDF) for more details and the important safety information below.

Safety Information
Thyrogen® (thyrotropin alfa for injection) is used in combination with other tests to detect recurring or leftover thyroid cancer cells in patients with a history of certain types of thyroid cancer. Thyrogen is injected in a muscle, and is available only by prescription. The most common side effects reported in clinical studies were nausea, headache, weakness & vomiting. When using Thyrogen, there is a risk that thyroid cancer cells may not be detected and diagnosis of recurring cancer may be missed. If you think that Thyrogen may be right for you, or if you have any problems with the use of Thyrogen, please contact your doctor.
